Japanese Language Program
The Duke Japanese program emphasizes communication and the performance of tasks. If offers a four-year curriculum built on communicative, task-based and content based approaches. Instruction aims at developing proficiency from novice to advanced level and a cultural awareness in an integrated manner through tailored materials and interactive learning.
Along with the language courses, literature/culture courses are also offered in the department. A major and minor with concentration in Japanese are available. There are a variety of study abroad opportunities for students of Japanese: two exchange programs and several Duke-approved programs.
