Join alumni from the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies as they share experiences from their time at Duke and their subsequent professional journey. Following short presentations by the alumni guests, there will be an open time of Q&A for current students to raise their own questions about how the skills and knowledge acquired in the AMES program can carry over into a variety of career paths.
Open to all undergraduates at Duke.

A recent Duke graduate from the class of 2023, Rithik Castelino earned with distinction a B.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Environmental Chemistry and a B.A. in Asian & Middle Eastern Studies, with a concentration in Hindi. He currently is a research fellow at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
Nicolas Cort graduated from Duke in 2020, receiving a B.A. in Asian & Middle Eastern Studies, with a Chinese concentration, and a B.S. in Economics. Since graduating, Nicolas has worked in both academic and professional settings. Notable experiences include an academic-year internship in communications at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy, a Beijing-based think tank. Nicolas is currently a special projects analyst for Webull, a global online broker-dealer with operations in Mainland China and Hong Kong.
Chris Hassel graduated from Duke with a B.A. in Asian & Middle Eastern Studies, with the Arabic concentration, along with minors in Economics and Cultural Anthropology. He has completed a semester of bachelor’s-level study in the Anthropology department in Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan. He recently lived in Jordan as a fellow at the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA), a prestigious study program aimed at preparing advanced learners for careers involving the Arabic language. Chris worked as the site coordinator of DukeEngage Jordan in the summer of 2023, after which he returned to the United States to work as an English-Arabic translator. During his time at Duke, Bowen Jiang studied Japanese language for three years, and took classes on Japanese linguistics and second language pedagogy. Under the guidance of Yunchuan Chen, he participated in research on Japanese pragmatics as well as translation projects. He graduated in 2022 with a B.A. in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies with a Japanese concentration and a B.S. in Computer Science. Currently, he works as an associate software engineer at T. Rowe Price.
Josh Lovett is a third-year doctoral student in the Community & Applied Developmental Psychology Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. At Duke, Josh studied psychology, Korean and education and then went on to serve as a Fulbright Scholar in South Korea from 2018-2021, where he taught ESL to a wide range of students. Josh is particularly interested in teaching and pedagogy and wants to explore teaching-oriented careers after completing his Ph.D.
