A cultural history of modern Egypt: the Arab spring; arts of the revolution; Egyptian cinema, popular culture, and literature; Islamic politics, Islamic thought, and Islamic mobilization; Arab nationalism and Gamal Abd al-Nasser; the economics of Egyptian politics; the Awakening (Nahda) of the 19th century; Muhammad Ali and the Ottoman empire; British and French conquests of Egypt; and orientalist knowledge about Egypt. Includes a trip to Egypt over break. One course.
