Majors

Middle East Major

Requirements: 10 Courses

Of the 10 courses, 8 must be at the 200 level or above. These courses should be distributed as follows:

Language Courses: 3 to 6 Courses

  • At least 2 must be at the 300 level or above in one of the following Middle Eastern languages
    • Arabic
    • Hebrew
    • Turkish
    • Persian
  • May take courses in additional language of the region
  • Courses at the 100 level may not count toward major

NOTE: Students whose competence in a language exceeds the most advanced language course offered by the department may substitute for literature/culture courses in their area of concentration. Please contact language coordinators to schedule a placement test.  

Middle East Literature/Culture Courses: 3 to 6 Courses

  • All must be at the 100 level or above
  • Must be in the literatures and cultures of the Middle East (Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, Persian)
  • 2 of these must have an AMES course number

Literature/Culture Courses outside of Middle East Region: 1 to 2 Courses

  • Must be focused on another region (i.e. either Hindi or East Asia)
  • Must be at the 100 level or above
  • Must have an AMES course number

East Asia Major

Requirement: 10 Courses

Of the 10 courses, 8 must be at the 200 level or above. These courses should be distributed as follows:

Language Courses: 3 to 6 Courses

  • At least 2 must be at the 300 level or above in one of the following East Asian languages
    • Chinese
    • Japanese
    • Korean
  • May take courses in additional language of the region (including Tibetan)
  • Courses at the 100 level may not count toward major

East Asian Literature/Culture Courses: 3 to 6 Courses

  • All must be at the 100 level or above
  • Must be in the literatures and cultures of East Asia (Chinese, Japanese, Korean)
  • 2 of these must have an AMES course number

Literature/Culture Courses outside of East Asia Region: 1 to 2 Courses

  • Must be focused on another region (i.e. either Hindi or the Middle East)
  • Must be at the 100 level or above
  • Must have an AMES course number

Interregional Major

The interregional track is designed to support students who wish to study more than one language or culture and to pursue cross- and inter-regional research.

Requirement: 10 Courses

Of the 10 courses, 8 must be at the 200 level or above. These courses should be distributed as follows:

Language Courses: 3 to 6 Courses

  • At least 2 of these must be at the 300 level or above in 1 AMES language
  • At least 1 must be at the 200 level or above in a language corresponding to another region covered by the department
  • Introductory language courses will not count toward the major

  • Must be at the 100 level or above
