East Asia Major

Requirement: 10 Courses

Of the 10 courses (at least 10 credits), 8 must be at the 200 level or above. These courses should be distributed as follows:

Language Courses: 3 to 6 Courses

  • At least 2 must be at the 300 level or above in one of the following East Asian languages:
    • Chinese
    • Japanese
    • Korean
  • May take courses in additional language of the region (including Tibetan)
  • Language courses at the 100 level will not count toward major

NOTE: Students whose competence in a language exceeds the most advanced language course offered by the department may substitute for literature/culture courses in their area of concentration. Please contact language coordinators to schedule a placement test.

East Asian Literature/Culture Courses: 4 to 7 Courses

  • Distribution of courses: at least one course at the 100 level, at least one course at the 200-300 level, and at least one course at the 400 level and above  (each course must equal one credit)
  • Must be in the literatures and cultures of East Asia (Chinese, Japanese, Korean)
  • 3 of these must be taken in AMES 
  • Students may count 1-2 AMES courses dealing with other literature and cultures toward their majors. All courses have to be at the 100-level and above
