Second Language Acquisition

Second language acquisition (SLA) studies how people learn a second language, or in a broader sense, any language learned in addition to one’s native language. As an interdisciplinary discipline, SLA is related to linguistics, psychology, cognitive psychology, sociology, and education. To better facilitate learners’ second language (L2) learning in the classroom context and in the study-abroad context, AMES’ faculty research mainly focuses on learner language development, cross-linguistic influences, cognitive and social aspects of L2 language learning, and the effects of different instructional approaches on L2 language learning.
